Elements with Enid: Line

The most important element in a design, line is the visual path that directs eye movement through a composition. An understanding of line and its emotional qualities enables a floral artist to select materials to best express a desired concept. A floral composition includes the natural lines of flowers themselves, such as stems or erect snapdragons, plus those created by lining up multiple flowers of the same type or color. Lines may be:

  • Static: rigid, vertical and horizontal; provides stability, strength and calm

  • Dynamic: curved, diagonal, zig-zagged; creates energy, motion and visual rhythm

  • Actual: visually, actually present

  • Implied: imagined in the mind’s eye, connecting dots

Students studied Enid’s transportation-themed designs, such as “cable car,” “river boat” and “iron horse",” for actual lines in the screenprinted design, and for lines implied by jewel placements.
